A Force to be Reckoned With
After war broke out, The Union Army was giving Harriet many jobs, as they were well aware of her commitment to their cause. On Union orders, she went South to work with escaped slaves taken in by the Union Army, worked as a nurse and teacher to the Gullah people of the Sea Islands, who had been left behind by their owners when they fled the Union Army, Rounded up some black men who were scouts or spies in the area, and lead a couple information passings as a spy herself. In July of 1863, she even led troops under the command of Colonel James Montgomery in the Combahee River expedition, disrupting Southern supply lines by destroying bridges and railroads. The mission freed more than 750 slaves.
