FirearmsNaturally, guns are an essential weapon of modern war, and used often in the war.
Rifles were a new kind of gun that provided mainly the Union army with much quicker reload time and greater accuracy in the field. With them, they used minie balls, bullets that had a more streamlined design and inflicted more damage to their target. They effectively increased the rate of death in battle. Eventually, the Americans got their hands on repeating rifles, which could shoot more than one bullet before having to reload; a notable example of this function is the Spencer carbine, which could shoot up to seven bullets in 30 seconds. Like most innovations in the civil war, their use was mostly in the north. |
