The Short and Violent Victory
The Battle of Antietam was fought in Sharpsburg, Maryland. The Union general was George McClellan, and the southern general was Robert E. Lee. This war was the bloodiest battle fought in a single day, and was a Union victory. This win for the North persuaded Lincoln to make the Emancipation Proclamation.
