The Division of the Enemy
The Battle of Vicksburg was a Northern victory. Their strategy, led by Ulysses S. Grant, was to blockade the ports of the city so the people would be forced to surrender. This successfully split the Confederacy in half, due to Vicksburg's location on the Mississippi River. It also upgraded Grant's rank to General-in-Chief of the Union armies.
