Cameras
Photography was a breakthrough during this time period, as the civil war was the first war that could be captured through real pictures and preserved throughout history. As much of a breakthrough as this was however, none of these pictures could really show any of the action on the battlefield, as setup for these photos simply took too long, and trying to capture battle with one of these cameras would be suicide.
Invented in the 1830s by Samuel Morse, the telegraph was one of the more revolutionary inventions, as it shaped the civil war and gave the North a massive advantage. The telegraph was a device that transmitted electrical signals over a wires, which were spread between stations all over the country. Morse also invented a code which used a series of dots and dashes to represent different letters or numbers. The majority of telegraph lines were in the North, and Abe Lincoln planned to take advantage of this in battle planning strategies. Lincoln used the telegraph to give orders to his troops in the quickest and most efficient way possible. This gave the Northern president a hands-on opportunity to lead his troops into battle and eventually win the civil war.
