The Final Blow
Sherman’s March to the sea began in Atlanta and ended in Savannah, Georgia. Sherman knew that in order to end the war, the Union would need to demoralize the South so they no longer had the support or will to keep fighting. To achieve this, Sherman’s troops destroyed everything in their path; from houses to cattle to crops. The end of Sherman’s March led to Lee’s surrender at the Appomattox Courthouse, essentially ending the war as a Union Victory.
