The Railroad System
The railroad was an excellent means of transportation during the war, allowing soldiers to be sent to locations much quicker than they could be before, as they used to go by carriage. The union had the advantage with this element, as there were 22,000 miles of tracks in the north, but only 9,000 by contrast in the south. As well as soldiers, the trains were also useful for sending supplies and aid to the front.
